Data released from UCAS has revealed that a record number of students were accepted through Clearing this year.
Following A-level results day on 15 August 2019, 47,770 people were accepted onto courses via Clearing, marking a significant rise from the 42,840 recorded in 2018.
In total, 56,400 people have been accepted onto courses, slightly up when compared to 54,300 acceptances recorded 2018.
An increased proportion of 18-year olds were accepted onto courses, up 1 per cent year-on-year despite a 1.9 per cent decline in the number of 18 year olds in the overall UK population.
Rising student numbers highlight the appeal of studying in the UK and is great news for property investors interested in purpose-built accommodation.
Rising overseas student numbers
Investors considering investing in UK purpose-built student accommodation will also be interested to know that applications from overseas students have reached a new high.
Around 37,350 international students (outside of the EU) have been accepted onto UK university courses. This figure represents a 6 per cent rise when compared to 2018.
Despite rising international student applications, the number of students from the EU dipped slightly to 28,330 – down 230 students from last year – according to UCAS.
Traditionally, international students are the key demographic for PBSA and are often prepared to pay a premium for all-inclusive, higher quality accommodation. A rising demand from international students is excellent news for student property investors and with an increasing pool of tenants willing to pay higher rents, investors can expect reliable returns for many years to come.
